    Why We're Building an Agent-First Planning Platform

    AI agents are getting good at doing work. The missing piece isn't smarter agents — it's the infrastructure for humans and agents to collaborate on complex goals without one side losing visibility or the other losing autonomy.

    THE PROBLEM

    The Collaboration Gap

    AI agents are increasingly capable of doing real work — research, planning, coding, analysis. But they operate in isolation. Each conversation starts from scratch. Each agent works alone. Humans can't see what agents are doing or why. And when things go wrong, there's no trail to follow. The tools we have today treat agents as sophisticated autocomplete, not as collaborators working toward shared objectives over days, weeks, or months.

    This creates a painful choice. Humans either micromanage agents — writing detailed prompts, reviewing every output, manually stitching results together — which defeats the purpose of having capable agents in the first place. Or they trust agents blindly, handing off complex work with a vague instruction and hoping for the best, which leads to wasted effort and unpredictable outcomes. There's no middle ground. No way to direct without dictating, to oversee without hovering. That's the gap we're building for.

    Agents Drive, Humans Steer

    Goals, not task lists

    Humans don't create task lists or manage project boards. They define what success looks like — goals, constraints, priorities — and agents do the rest: decomposing work, gathering knowledge, identifying dependencies, executing tasks, and reporting back.

    The human's role is strategic. Approve key decisions. Redirect when priorities shift. Resolve ambiguity that agents can't handle on their own. Every interaction between human and system is about direction, not micromanagement. This isn't about removing humans from the loop — it's about putting them at the right altitude.

    Shared Understanding Through Shared Context

    The biggest barrier to human-agent collaboration is asymmetric information. The agent knows what it researched but the human doesn't. The human knows the business context but the agent doesn't. Both sides end up making decisions based on incomplete pictures.

    We solve this with a progressive context engine that assembles exactly the right information for each situation, organized in four layers: task focus, local neighborhood (parent phases, sibling tasks, direct dependencies), knowledge (relevant facts from the temporal graph), and extended context (full plan overview, goals, transitive dependencies). When an agent works on a task, it gets structured context at the depth it needs. When a human reviews that work, they see the same context the agent had. Steering becomes informed because both sides see the same picture.

    Knowledge Compounds, Work Doesn't Repeat

    Every agent interaction produces knowledge: decisions made, facts discovered, approaches evaluated, contradictions found. In traditional agent workflows, this knowledge evaporates when the conversation ends. The next agent — or the same agent in a new session — starts from zero.

    We capture knowledge in a temporal graph that persists across sessions, agents, and plans. What Agent A learns today is available to Agent B tomorrow. Contradictions between old and new findings are detected automatically. Knowledge gaps are surfaced when an agent starts a task that has relevant information waiting. The system gets smarter over time — not just the individual agent, but the entire organizational knowledge base.

    How It Works

    What the Agent Does

    Creates a plan and decomposes the goal into an RPI chain: Research current bottlenecks, Plan optimization strategy, Implement changes

    Research phase: profiles endpoints, analyzes query patterns, benchmarks database performance, logs all findings to the knowledge graph

    Plan phase: synthesizes research into a prioritized approach with tradeoffs. Pauses and flags the plan for human review before proceeding

    After approval: implements changes following the approved plan, with each task receiving compacted context from research and planning phases

    Completing each task automatically unblocks downstream work. Status propagates through the dependency graph. Learnings persist for future use

    What the Human Experiences

    Sets the goal: "Improve API response times by 50%." Adds constraints: "No breaking changes to public endpoints. Budget: 1 sprint."

    Gets a notification that research is complete. Reviews a structured summary of findings — the same context the agent worked with, not a separate report

    Reviews the proposed optimization plan. Approves with one adjustment: "Prioritize the /search endpoint, it's customer-facing." Agent incorporates the feedback

    Monitors implementation progress on the dashboard. Sees critical path, dependency status, and completion percentage. No need to check in or ask for updates

    After completion, the knowledge graph contains performance baselines, optimization approaches evaluated, and decisions made — available for the next performance goal

    The human spent maybe 20 minutes across the entire process — setting direction, reviewing research, approving a plan, and watching progress. The agent handled hours of research, planning, and implementation. Neither side operated blind.

    LOOKING AHEAD

    What's Next

    The current system enables a single organization to orchestrate agents toward goals. We're working toward multi-agent coordination — intelligent task dispatch based on agent capabilities, with claim and lease mechanisms for concurrent execution. Beyond that: goal-driven autonomy, where agents proactively monitor goal health, identify stalled work, and create plans without being asked. And ultimately, learning organizations — knowledge that compounds across the entire team, with agents that get measurably smarter based on collective experience. The infrastructure for this future is what we're building today.
